Featuring in-depth interviews with many of the world's best exponents of the artform, High Tech Soul focuses on the creators of the genre -- Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson -- and looks at the relationships and personal struggles behind the music. Artists like Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Carl Craig, Eddie Fowlkes and a host of others explain why techno, with its abrasive tones and resonating basslines, could not have come from anywhere but Detroit.

Es gibt sie tatsächlich, diese Platten, die dein Leben verändern können.
In meinem Fall zählt dieser Mix - der 2003 der ersten Ausgabe des Deutsch Magazines beigelegt war - definitiv dazu. Hier wurde die Tür in die 80er gerade so weit aufgestoßen, daß man völlig unvoreingenommen sehen konnte was wirklich dahinter verborgen lag. Und das war eben nicht nur 08/15 Popschrott, sondern ein eigenes - von mir bis dato sträflich vernachlässigtes - Universum, dessen Einflüsse (auch wenn sie in letzter Zeit zugegebenermaßen reichlich überstrapaziert werden...) in der modernen Popmusik ebenso allgegenwärtig sind wie jene der 40er, 50er, 60er und 70er Jahre. Den Jungs von Terranova gelang es damals ganz fabelhaft einige Perlen aus dieser Dekade nahtlos - und ohne, daß sie sich dabei auch nur im geringsten anbiedern würden - in ihren Electromix einzureihen.
Der hinlänglich bekannte "Fetenhit" "Eisbär" von Grauzone hat sich seit dieser ersten Begegnung auf Augenhöhe nie wieder so ganz aus meinem Kopf verabschiedet. Und nach einem Tonträger auf dem man Neons "Neon" findet, suche ich seither bei jedem Flohmarkt - oder Plattenladenbesuch mit einem fast schon an Verzweiflung grenzendem Enthusiasmus...

Während wir gespannt auf das - für dieses Jahr angekündigte - neue Album der Good Shoes warten, gibt's hier schonmal 'ne schicke kleine Coverversion ihres Songs "Never Meant To Hurt You".
Und zwar von Lightspeed Champion - vormals Sänger der Test Icicles (...übrigens - mal abgesehen von den Foals, Bloc Party, Maximo Park und, natürlich, Good Shoes - die einzige britische Rockband deren Debüt-Album in den letzten 10 Jahren erschienen ist und das ich trotzdem nicht zumindest einigermaßen beschissen fand...) und mittlerweile Solo unterwegs.

Mal abgesehen von der lobenswerten LAUSCHDOCHMAL Veranstaltungsreihe im Zucker-Club ist Bremen ja nun nicht gerade mit zahlreichen Gastspielen von Top-Acts der internationalen "Dancemusic-Szene" gesegnet. Eine äußerst willkommende Ausnahme bildet da der Gig der britischen Rave-Legenden Bomb The Bass im Ting Club am 31.01.09. Insbesondere, weil die Lokalmatadoren und anerkannten Partymaschinen von JamesLars & The Sexual Chocolate das Vorprogramm bestreiten werden.
Ihren ersten großen Hit hatten die Sampling-Pioniere um Mastermind Tim Simenon 1987 mit ihrer Debüt-Single "Beat Dis":
Eng verbunden mit der Bristoler Szene um Nelee Hooper (Soul II Soul) und The Wild Bunch (Massive Attack, Smith & Mighty, Tricky u.s.w.) machte sich Tim Simenon - Ende der 80er/Anfang der 90er Jahre - als international gefragter Produzent einen herausragenden Namen. Unter anderem umfasst sein Oeuvre Arbeiten für Depeche Mode, David Bowie, Primal Scream, Seal, Sinead O'Connor oder auch Lali Puna. Entscheidend beteiligt war er u.a. an den Produktionen von:

Mittlerweile ist er Teil der ziemlich erfolgreichen Band She Wants Revenge) sein. Der Text ist eine Referenz an den Roman "The Naked Lunch" des US-amerikanischen Schriftstellers William S. Burroughs.
Das aktuelle Album "Future Chaos" besticht mit einer tollen Gästeliste (Mark Lanegan, Jon Spencer, Fujiya and Miyagi, Toob, Paul Conboy) und einem Soundgewand, das sich immer mehr - weg von der altbewährten Cut-Up-Ästhetik - hin zu fein austarierten Songstrukturen (die man vielleicht am ehesten in die Electronica-Schublade stecken könnte) orientiert.

Am 12.01.09 erscheint das brandneue Album von Birdy Nam Nam. Es trägt den sympathischen Titel "Manual For Succesful Rioting" und ist, nach der ersten Singleauskopplung "Worried" (auschecken bei den Kollegen von Beat Does It Better...) zu beurteilen, doch um einiges mehr "nach vorne" produziert als das 2005er Debüt der vier unumstrittenen französischen Turntablism-Götter.
Wer sich live von den schier unfassbaren Skills (das Video oben ist wirklich nur eine Art Vorgeschmack - mehr davon bei YouTube) der ehemaligen DMC Worldchampions überzeugen lassen will bekommt dazu am 16. Januar beim EuroSonic Festival in Groningen die Gelegenheit.

"...Buddy Peace has been championing a slow-burning revolution in mixtapes for over five years now. 'Wolf Diesel Mountain' is a monster fed on the bones of all that have gone before it. This is a mix that is complex and diverse - slices and selections of nearly 100 tracks in under an hour. Samples are chopped, beats are re-programmed and tracks are fully remixed - without ever falling into the common trap of mixes that veer off on tangents to show off the DJ's record collection.
