the name of this band is nouvelle vague

Das Konzept ist ja mittlerweile etwas "abgelatscht": Nouvelle Vague basteln seit zwei Alben aus dem kleinen Einmaleins der New Wave-Klassiker hübsch abgehangene Bossa Nova-Nummern. Auf ihrem neuesten Werk - trägt den schlüssigen Titel "3" - fängt das nun wirklich langsam an zu langweilen.

Dennoch: Ihre Version des Talking Heads-Spätwerks "Road To Nowhere" ist durchaus gelungen zu nennen - was aber auch daran liegen mag, daß der Song schlicht und einfach absolute Klasse hat.

Wer sich allerdings an den Neufassungen von Songdinosauriern wie "Blister In The Sun" und "God Save the Queen" ergötzen soll bleibt mir wahrhaftig ein Rätsel...

Tausendsassa Beck Hansen startete dieser Tage ein äußerst bemerkenswertes musikalisches Projekt mit dem Namen "Record Club". Auf beck.com heißt es dazu:

"We've been working on changes to the website for the last few months. We'll be adding new sections as they're ready. The first one to be added is called Record Club, an informal meeting of various people to record an album in a day. An album will be chosen to be reinterpreted and used as a framework. Nothing rehearsed or arranged ahead of time. A track will be uploaded once a week on beck.com as well as through the web sites of those involved with the project.

For this first edition, after lengthy deliberation and coming close to covering Digital Underground's Sex Packets, all present voted in favor of the 'other' Underground's The Velvet Underground & Nico. Participants included this time around are Nigel Godrich, Joey Waronker, Brian Lebarton, Bram Inscore, Yo, Giovanni Ribisi, Chris Holmes, and from Iceland, special guest Thorunn Magnusdottir, and myself. Thanks to everyone who helped put this together, and to all of you for indulging in this experiment. More soon."

Der erste Titel stammt von Joni Mitchells Klassiker "The Hissing Of Summer Lawns". Laut Prince (1985 im Rolling Stone) "the last album I loved all the way through". Hier entleit Mitchell eine Aufnahme der "Royal Drummers Of Burundi" und steuert dieser ihre Vocals, Drums und Synthesizer bei.

Der zweite Titel ist auf Herbie Hancocks - 2008 mit dem GRAMMY® für das beste Album ausgezeichneten - "River: The Joni Letters" zu finden. Dieses Album befasst sich nahezu ausschließlich mit der Interpretation von Mitchells Werk. Außer Leonard Cohen wirken darauf Musiker wie z.B. Saxofonlegende Wayne Shorter, Bassist Dave Holland, Norah Jones, Corinne Bailey Rae, Tina Turner und Joni Mitchell selbst mit.

Welche der beiden Versionen besser ist, vermag man kaum zu sagen... entscheidet selbst.
